About

The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) aims to accelerate the development of new or improved drugs, vaccines, microbicides and diagnostics against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, with focus on phase II and III clinical trials in sub-Saharan Africa.

A high-level conference on the second EDCTP programme will be held on 5 November 2012 in Cape Town, South Africa to consult African and international stakeholders on the second EDCTP programme (2014-2024).

Specifically, the following four strategic key issues as regards EDCTP-II will be addressed and conclusions sought:

  1. Lessons learnt from EDCTP-I
  2. Scope of EDCTP-II
  3. Role and commitment of the participating European and African countries
  4. private sector participation and engagement in EDCTP-II, in particular of industry, foundations and charities.

Invited participants include European, African and international high-level representatives from policy, industry, patient organisations, non-governmental organisations and research community. A total of approximately 200 participants are expected. Participation in the high-level conference is by invitation only.

After the conference, a conclusive conference report will be prepared, summarising the key issues discussed, the up-front commitments provided, and draw conclusions which will feed into the next steps of the preparation for the EDCTP-II programme.

The conference is organised jointly by the South African Department for Science & Technology, the European Commission and EDCTP on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Science &Technology cooperation agreement between the European Union and South Africa.

The conference also aims to raise additional public and private engagement in and support for EDCTP activities. The high-level conference will provide a forum to discuss stakeholders needs, opportunities and expectations in EDCTP-II, as well as to provide endorsement and announce commitments and pledges.
